After a day of running errands in Superior and Deluth, we were ready to get back “out.” Mike was nice enough to take care of all of the driving in the cities and I was more than grateful. I still find it stressful to pull the trailer, but am pretty comfortable with longer driving. In the cities, though, we were in and out of busy parking lots and had to deal with a surprising number of steep hills. In the end, we only put one divot it a hot parking lot and we were successful in our erranding, so we will call it a win! We also met up with Mike’s co-worker Croix, who was nice enough to share his knowledge of possible things to do on the North Shore and even gave us his maps of the Superior Hiking Trail.

We headed north and started to breathe easier once we got on route 61. We aimed for the town of Silver Bay which had not only a donation-based dump and refill spot, but a parking lot for RVs near a scenic overlook. This wound up being our base for a few days – a free place to park the trailer while we did day trips in the truck or on foot.
I am very much a planner, so when our grand plan changed due to CO-VID, I embraced the freedom of not planning too far ahead. That being said, I seem to suffer a bit from FOMO (fear of missing out), so find myself consulting lots of apps as we move along to see if there is something we should be doing or if there is a best place to be at any given time. While we are pretty much right next to an iron ore plant (Thank you Cliffs for sponsoring the scenic outlook and parking!), this spot was a great find on one of the boondocking apps.

Glad you guys had a good time in my homeland. (And kudos to Croix for his advice.) I joke that I know every rock on the north shore, so I laughed when I saw the pic of the camp chairs parked just a few yards from one of my notable geology field trip stops. 🙂
